El fin del mundo y del inicio
Olivia Teroba

SHORT STORIES | 2022 | 148 pages

The protagonists of the eight stories in this book are women trying to understand themselves and overcome a life surrounded by sociopolitical violence or family trauma: “Contrary to what is often believed, in order to traverse the world alone you don’t need courage, self-confidence, to be extroverted, or to have a detailed plan. All you need is a push.” Each story is told from different angles and subjectivities: the daughter of a kidnapped activist clings to drawing and sees the features of her lost mother in Chinese ink; the granddaughter who travels alone to the end of the world on behalf of her grandmother seeks answers that she doesn't know if she wants to find; other parents flee from an urban environment of gunfights and take their girls to the banks of an unexpectedly sinister river. With every world that threatens to come to an end, there is the possibility of another beginning, of a new space for meaning to be created.

Olivia Teroba patiently listens to the journey of souls and accompanies them, serene and compassionate, in order to glimpse the end of connections and self-deception, to traverse a remote geography in order to feel pain or caress an animal in the midst of confusion.
