Pedro Juan Gutiérrez
Pedro Juan Gutiérrez (Matanzas, Cuba, 1950) began to work at the age of 13 selling ice cream and newspapers. He later also worked as a soldier, farmer, laborer, radio speaker, and journalist until 1998, when he first published Trilogía sucia de La Habana in Spain, which immediately became an international success. The novel has been translated into 22 languages. In addition to several poetry collections, Pedro Juan Gutiérrez has published El rey de la Habana, Animal Tropical (Alfonso García-Ramos Novel Prize 2000), Melancolía de los leones, (Sur del Mundo Narrative Prize, 2003), Nuestro GG en La Habana, El nido de la serpiente (Prix des Amériques insulaires et de la Guyane, 2008), Carne de perro, Corazón mestizo, Diálogo con mi sombra, Fabian y el caos, and Estoico y frugal.
