Los nombres de los animales
Jazmina Barrera
CHILDREN’S | 2021 | 47 pages
Illustrated by Rachel Levit Ruiz
The names of animals come from strange stories, incredible myths, intrepid explorers, and silly mistakes. Often, the names reflect the characteristics of the animal itself: the name hippopotamus, for example, comes from the Greek words "hippos" (meaning horse) and "potamus" (meaning river). The meaning of tiger can be traced to the words arrow and sharp, two characteristics that define this mysterious striped feline.
In these pages full of surprise, humor, and wisdom, readers will be able to rediscover the names of these beautifully illustrated mammals, fish, reptiles and birds, date them back to the origins of civilizations, and trace them back to their original meanings and roots.
Rachel Levit Ruiz is a Mexican artist and illustrator. She graduated from Parsons School of Design and has published illustrations in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and as a Google Doodle, among other places.
